Sandblasting is a method applied by having the grease, dirt, rust, and corrosion occurring on the metal due to metal facing with rusting and corrosion over time removed and the lifetime of the metal by coating process extended through the coating process. The sandblasting process is performed with various abrasive substances called grits with different specifications. Along with removing the rust and corrosion that appears on the metal surface or as in micronized dimensions, sandblasting reveals the true essence of the metal.

A metal that its sandblasting has just finished is at its most vulnerable phase towards rusting and corrosion. In the case of the metal is left in a damp environment right after sandblasting, within a few hours, it is observed that the metal is exposed to oxidation, which demonstrates itself as the change of color. Therefore, the sandblasted metal should be protected in the shortest time possible and the contact of the metal with air should be prevented precisely by coating.

As Gera Makina, we are providing these applications professionally by our well-trained employees. It is worth to note that no matter how much of a high-quality sandblasting is performed, in the case of a coating application done unprofessionally, even a spot up to the tip of the needle is in contact with the air, it is inevitable for corrosion to start from that spot that is in contact with air and to spread through the entire metal. For this reason, it is extremely crucial to apply the coating process with a professional team and equipment. To use different abrasives on different metal structures and manufacturing products depending on the sector which is used and to apply appropriate epoxy coating professionally as well as in suitable film thicknesses is another key factor of quality. The essential purpose of sandblasting is to clear the metal from other substances, to which the coating to be applied onto before other procedures and to create pores and roughness that the coating to be applied can hold onto the metal surface.

The sandblasting process provides a roughness just as sandpaper. It is impossible for coating applied onto the surface to adhere to the metal surface through any chemical reactions. In order for the adhesion to be complete, the surface must be roughened with appropriate abrasives.

Sandblasting Norms and Values

It is evaluated according to ISO 8501- 1:1998 and TSE EN ISO 8501-1 standards.

The surface cleanliness values according to ISO 8501-1 are as follows.

Sa 1 <80% Light blast cleaning

Sa 2 - 80% Thorough blast cleaning

Sa 2.5 - 96% Very thorough blast cleaning

Sa 3 - 99% Blast cleaning to visually clean steel
